Dry Tortugas Facts

Dry Tortugas National Park measures 100 square miles, although it is mostly underwater.

There is no natural source of fresh water in the Dry Tortugas. This is why the island was given the name “Dry,” in order to warn mariners that fresh water was scarce.

Tortugas means “turtles,” and the island was given the name by Ponce de Leon after he observed an abundance of turtles on the island.

The Dry Tortugas were an important staging area for U.S. battleships during the Spanish-American War.

The coral reef off the shores of the Dry Tortugas stretches all the way from the coast of Miami in the Atlantic to the Gulf in the Dry Tortugas.

Coral Reefs are alive, this is why it is important not to touch them when you structure, you can hurt them!

The Dry Tortugas is home to over 200 shipwrecks.
